Apply for Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN): Nonprofits are
required to obtain a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN or ID number)
regardless of whether or not you have employees. This number is available
through the IRS and is used to identify the organization when tax documents
are filed. After incorporation you will need to apply for a new number under the
corporate name. (Form SS-4 when applying for your EIN).
File for 501(c)(3) status: To obtain recognition of tax-exempt status, retrieve
a public charity status Form 1023 (application) and Publication 557 (detailed
instructions) from the local IRS office. Both of these documents can be
downloaded from the IRS web site. Apply for local and state tax exemption.
You may apply for exemption from income, sales, and property taxes.
Business Credit
You can establish your business as a separate entity, to
separate your business credit profile from your personal credit
profile. Therefore, you will need to establish your business
structure as a corporation (smaller businesses generally are
established as a Limited Liability Company, or LLC,).
Find out the requirements from both lenders and credit bureaus.
By doing a credit assessment, you'll know the expected
standards prior to establishing and building your credit profile.
Once you have a business credit rating, it is to your advantage
to review your credit profiles from credit bureaus at least once or
twice a year. Check reports for errors in order to keep your
information accurate and updated.
